What is AEO? How brands get cited in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

AI answers are becoming a new front door to your brand. Here is what AEO is, what the platforms themselves say, and what to do this month.

More people now ask a question and read an AI-written answer instead of scrolling ten blue links. When that answer names a brand or links to a page, that brand has been cited. Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of becoming one of the sources those answers rely on.

I lead digital operations for a confidential performance marketing and AEO agency, and the first thing I tell every brand is this: AEO is not a trick. The platforms themselves say so, and their own documentation is the best starting point.

What AEO is, and what it is not

AEO means writing and structuring your pages so that AI answer tools can find them, understand them and trust them enough to cite. It sits on top of SEO. If your pages are not crawlable, indexed and genuinely useful, no AI tool will cite them.

What it is not: a secret markup, a special file or a prompt hack. Google says plainly that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for snippets.

1. Get the search fundamentals right

Make sure your important pages are indexable, load fast on mobile, link to each other, and put the key information in readable text, not only in images or scripts. Google lists these basics as the foundation for its AI features too.

2. Answer real questions directly

AI tools favour pages that state a clear answer. Open a section with a one or two sentence answer, then add detail. A short FAQ block on each important page, written the way your customers actually ask, is one of the simplest AEO upgrades.

3. Keep structured data honest

If you use schema markup such as FAQ or Organization, it should match what is visible on the page. Google asks for this alignment explicitly. Markup that says one thing while the page says another does more harm than good.

4. Let the right crawlers in

OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and site owners should allow it in robots.txt to appear there. Perplexity says the same for PerplexityBot. A simple robots.txt that welcomes both looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

Two details matter. First, GPTBot is a different crawler used for model training, so allowing or blocking it is a separate business decision. Second, tools that act on a user's request, such as ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User, are user-triggered and are not what decides search appearance. If you run a firewall, also allow each company's published IP ranges so the good crawlers are not blocked by accident.

5. Make your brand easy to recognise

This part is practice rather than platform documentation. Use the same brand name, description and links across your website, LinkedIn, directories and profiles. Publish an About page and clear service pages. AI tools build their picture of a brand from many places, and consistent signals reduce the chance of being misdescribed.

6. Measure what you can

In Google Search Console, AI features traffic is included in the Web search performance report, and Google Analytics shows what those visitors do next. For other tools, review referral sources and server logs for visits from ChatGPT and Perplexity, and track whether leads mention an AI tool. Expect small numbers at first and watch the trend.

AEO checklist for your brand

  1. Key pages indexed and snippet-eligible.
  2. Direct answers and a short FAQ on each important page.
  3. Structured data that matches visible content.
  4. robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
  5. Consistent brand name and profiles everywhere.
  6. Search Console and Google Analytics set up to measure.

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

AEO is the practice of making your content easy for AI answer tools, such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity, to find, understand and cite. In practice it builds on solid SEO rather than replacing it.

Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search, and structured data should match the visible content.

How do I let ChatGPT and Perplexity cite my website?

Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt, and permit their published IP ranges if you use a firewall. GPTBot is a separate crawler that OpenAI uses for model training, so blocking or allowing it is a different decision.

How do I measure traffic from AI answers?

For Google, Search Console's performance report includes AI features traffic under the Web search type, and Google Analytics shows engagement. For other tools, watch referral sources in Google Analytics and your server logs.
